The plot is based on an ancient Chinese allusion. Believing himself to be a modern-day Zhou Chu, eliminating the "Three Poisons," he fails to realize that greed, hatred, and delusion—concepts he cannot fully grasp—are the very sins and punishments he is destined to face.
