The Sandiaoling Eco-friendly Tunnel sits on the border between Ruifang District and Shuangxi District in New Taipei City. Originally a decommissioned railway tunnel from the Yilan Line of the Taiwan Railway, it was closed for over 30 years before being renovated and reopened in 2022. As Taiwan's first steel-reinforced bar bikeway, the tunnel connects the Mudan and Sandiaoling areas, integrating the "Route 2 Taiwan" low-carbon tourism concept to create a scenic route that combines historical significance with natural landscapes.
The tunnel’s most renowned feature is the reflective pool at its entrance, which perfectly mirrors the surrounding mountain scenery, leaving a lasting impression on visitors.
Beyond capturing memorable photos, the tunnel also preserves the charm of old railways and the surrounding stalactite terrain. Along the way, tourists can traverse tropical forests, waterfalls, and bridges, presenting a unique post-industrial landscape. The design also considers ecological conservation, employing indirect lighting to maintain the habitat for bats, making it well worth a detailed visit.
As a model of historical building reuse, this site is ideal for cycling, walking, and photography, offering a tranquil and story-rich ambiance that provides abundant natural and cultural backdrops for film crews. A comprehensive reservation system is in place, so visitors require advance online applications to visit, with entry granted via QR code.
